WRLC is looking for a range of content for each month’s newsletter. If you have anything to share, please don’t hesitate to send it along (using the information below). It doesn’t have to be breaking library news - though we would welcome some hard-hitting investigative journalism. But we’d also love cookie recipes, book recommendations, or requests for new WRLC service enhancements like the OCR update above.
With that in mind, and as we enter spooky season…
Here are a few of our favorite scary movies.
Aaron Krebeck - My all-time favorite scary movie is Peter Weir’s Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975). It’s amazing that Weir could make a film so terrifying with almost zero gore or violence. In fact, I’m not sure there’s even one drop of blood in the whole film. Just pure psychological horror. Runner up would probably be something early by David Cronenberg, but those are solidly on the other side of the gore spectrum.
Jamie Kutzuba - A more recent pick, Jamie suggests 2025’s Weapons by Zach Cregger. With a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, this unusual, creepy, and strangely fun film is about a town full of children who mysteriously vanish - and then come back. Her runners up include His House (2020) and both Japanese and American versions of The Ring.
Katy Puccio recommends Krampus. This 2015 comedy-horror is about a half-man, half-goat, half-demon beast from Alpine folklore who serves as the devilish, punishing counterpart to St. Nicholas.
Sarah Concepcion is not a huge fan of horror, but recommends The Strangers film series that began in 2008. With elements of the Manson Family murders, the plot of the first film centers around three masked psycho-sociopathic home invaders that prey on the innocent owners.
Jacqueline Saavedra scares easily, but recommends the 1993 cult classic Hocus Pocus. She describes this film about a trio of witches as “Bette Midler at her most fabulous.” Sarah Jessica Parker and the sublime Kathy Najimy round out the cast. She also says the Netflix limited series The Haunting of Hill House is a great spooky story with a surprise twist. Apparently every scene filmed in the haunted house has at least one ghost hidden in the background, if you're looking closely!
